METASIG invites you to the workshop "Measuring and Comparing Instructional Effectiveness: A Data-Informed Approach Using ANCOVA" on April 17, 2025 at 14:00 pm. We are proud to host Taner Yapar and Ayşegül Sallı in this workshop. Please see the session abstract below.
Session Abstract
This interactive session explores how statistical analysis—specifically ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance)—can be used to measure and compare instructional effectiveness across different classes at the same CEFR level. Through real-world scenarios, participants will critically examine how adjusting for initial student differences allows for fairer comparisons of achievement. Using real data, the session will demonstrate how to apply ANCOVA in practice and interpret the outcomes to inform teaching and administrative decisions. Participants will also reflect on the limitations of relying solely on quantitative measures and discuss complementary approaches to evaluating instructional quality.
The session will explore:
o The challenges of measuring instructional effectiveness across multiple classes
o How to use pre-existing data (e.g., placement tests or quizzes) for fair comparisons
o The basics of ANCOVA and how it adjusts final scores for initial differences
o A real-life scenario of comparing seven B1-level classes using ANCOVA
o Live data analysis with ChatGPT to demonstrate statistical interpretation
o The strengths and limitations of ANCOVA in instructional evaluation
o The importance of combining data analysis with contextual and qualitative insights
